M.D. Grimm's Top 5 Vampire Movies

Good day everyone! Thanks for joining me!

To celebrate my newest release “Eye of the Beholder” I thought it would be fun to talk about our favorite vampire movies. I would have normally chosen books but I just haven’t read enough vamp books to generate a good list. Regardless, Dracula by Bram Stoker would be #1. It was the book that propelled a “courtly” vampire into the mainstream. Before him, vampires were undead corpses who were cursed to drink the blood of their descendants. Yum. For good or bad he made them into something else, something more.

Vampires have quite the sordid past especially in Eastern Europe. Did you know that garlic was actually only used to ward off the dead corpse smell? It doesn’t repel vampires. Also, staking a vampire was actually meant to stake them to the ground so they couldn’t rise up again. So if you were confronted with a vampire that was hunting you at night, you better say your prayers and hope for the best. Staking the creature out of its coffin wouldn’t do you a lick of good.

And on that cheery note, here are my top 5 vampire movies:

1. 30 Days of Night – based on a graphic novel (which I still need to read) and with Josh Hartnett in the lead role. It’s a good vampire horror/thrill movie that hit all the right spots. It was also a breath of fresh air to have vamps be monsters again.

2. Underworld – While I do like the first three, the original was unique and interesting

3. Daybreakers – interesting take on vampirism

4. Vampires – 1998 from James Carpenter

5. Let the Right One In – Swedish version, so creepy and good

Honorable mentions: The Lost Boys, Dracula 2000, Blade, The Forsaken, Shadow of the Vampire

So what about you? What are your favorite vampire movies? Or books? I always take suggestions.
