I loved the book

Something is wrong with me, seriously wrong. Because, well... I don't hate Christmas, I'm not a Grinch. Not really. But I hate kitsch, I'm as romantic as a bucket of sand, I'm the one who voluntarily takes shifts at work over Christmas, and a part of me might be some kind of Grinch-y after all... and somehow that Grinch-y kitsch-hating part of me went AWOL. Otherwise I can't explain why I loved this book so freaking much. Because it's a storybook Christmas tale full of kitsch and Christmas miracle and quasi insta!love and fluffy rainbow puking unicorn babies and a wonderful heartwarming love story (with a little angst and drama and heartache, thank god... omg, I feel like an asshole for being happy that there was heartache - wtf is happening with me o.O) and fluff and candy and so much sweetness and cuteness and adorableness and a lot of other <3-nesses and characters I wanted to hug and cuddle and a dog and a cat and another cat and... no, there was no fish, whatever, and all of it together was so beautiful to read and I enjoyed every moment and now I'm sad this book was so short and I'm even sadder, because there was no epilogue, even though the last chapter with the ~vision made me so freaking happy and I totally forgot what else I wanted to say and all I want to do is to re-read this book rtfn or buy the audio as well so I can re-erm-hear(?) it and I hope (or maybe I'm afraid) I will be back to normal once the holiday season is over...

One last thing before I stop babbling: So far there are three other Candy Man books, all of them about other guys, and that's great, I can't wait to read them, but please, please, please, please, pretty please, I need Joni's story!

Viel weiter nach unten kann es für Adam Marcia nicht gehen. Nicht nur, dass er von seiner Familie verstoßen wurde, er seinen Job und auch noch seinen Studienplatz verloren hat. Nun versagt auch noch das Auto seinen Dienst und Adam muss mit dem Bus nach Sacramento fahren. Dort soll er für seinen Cousin Rico die Wohnung hüten und sich um die darin lebenden Tiere kümmern. Kater Gonzo ist krank und kein besonders netter Zeitgenosse und der Hund Clopper ist riesig, aber händelbar.

Adam will die Zeit in Sacramento nutzen um wieder auf die Beine zu kommen. Dazu braucht er jedoch einen Job. Das ist dann doch einfacher als gedacht. Adam ergattert einen Job in einem Süssigkeitenladen. Die Leute, vor allem der Besitzer Darrin, sind wirklich freundlich zu ihm und Adam, der in seinem Leben nur wenig Freundlichkeit und Zuneigung erfahren hat, taut langsam auf.

Und da gibt es noch Finn Stewart. Dieser arbeitet im Familienbetrieb seiner Eltern mit und taucht immer wieder im Candy Heaven auf. Finn zeigt schnell Interesse an dem scheuen Adam und tut alles um dessen Aufmerksamkeit zu erringen. Adam ist sehr scheu und zurückhaltend, doch das kann Finn nicht von seiner Mission abhalten.

Candy Man ist der Auftakt der Candy Man Reihe von Amy Lane. So zuckrig, dass fast schon Kariesgefahr besteht. Aber nur fast, denn auch wenn die Geschichte einen hohen Romantikanteil hat, so kommt der Humor nicht zurück. Adam agiert trotz seiner Größe und seiner Vergangenheit als Soldat äußerst vorsichtig und distanziert. Die Erfahrungen seiner Kindheit und Jugend waren prägend und auch als Erwachsener hat er schlimme Zeiten durchgemacht.

Der Verrat seines Lovers sitzt noch tief und die Zurückweisung der Familie nagt ständig an ihm. Wirkliches Selbstbewusstsein kennt Adam nicht. Er fühlt sich unzulänglich und begreift auch nicht, was Finn eigentlich an ihm findet und wie er ihm überhaupt gerecht werden soll.

Während Adam also den dunklen, zerbrochenen und distanzierten Part in diesem Pairing verkörpert, ist Finn ganz anders. Er ist süss, fürsorglich, fröhlich und vor allem zuversichtlich. Das Glas ist halb voll und nicht halb leer. Auch er hat schon seine Erfahrungen gemacht und wurde auch schon verlassen. Doch wirklichen Schmerz und Verletzungen hat er noch nicht erleben müssen. Da Adam es ihm echt nicht leicht macht, kann man Finn nur bewundern. Denn er ist mutig, zielstrebig und wirklich geduldig. Selbst als Adam die Nerven wegwirft.

Aber natürlich gibt es für diese Geschichte ein Happy End und obwohl ich schon ein paar Mal bei Amy Lane auf die Nase gefallen bin, werde ich diese Reihe weiterverfolgen. Der Kurzroman ist romantisch und witzig, hat aber genug Herz-Schmerz und Drama um nicht zu kitschig zu werden.

This feels like classic Amy Lane, with a sugary-sweet story covering a tart little treat. While this tale is more sweet than sour, it has moments where it digs deep into the sour spots of the soul.
Some parts of the story felt a tad unrealistic and magical (mostly Finn’s unerring devotion), but I can chalk that up to an Amy Lane Christmas story--but other readers may take issue with that.
Speaking of magic...I love Darrin. It could be argued that he’s completely unrealistic, completely improbable, but that’s what makes the story work. His is a magical candy shop, like Willy Wonka’s. I loved his Pixy Stix foretelling and I loved how sweet he was. I don’t know if I want his story or if I want him to remain a mystery.
Overall I found this completely satisfying for the holiday season fix that some of us readers get, and I can see myself returning to it in future years.
