Description:

Reverend Ian Kenyon knows the harsh sting of life and how a man can suffer a loss of faith. The death of his wife and newborn son shook him to his foundations, and he's been drifting ever since.  Bryn Morgan has returned home from prison to the only family he has—an abusive father who abandoned him to the law when Bryn was unjustly accused of rape. Still poor, lost, and shunned, Bryn searches for work, any work that will allow him to survive.

Reluctantly moved by Bryn's plight, Ian hires the young man to work on his farm despite Bryn's prickly, defensive nature. Soon Ian fears his growing feelings of grace and compassion might be something else, something more... heated. Whatever the cause, he knows they are impossible to pursue, because Heaven only knows what would happen if a man of God began to have forbidden feelings for his hired man.

Read Chapter One

I love the slow build of their friendship, attraction and finally loving relationship. While there is plenty going on to keep the story moving, I never felt rushed to see them finally give in to their desires. Ms. Irving delivers yet another riveting story filled will brilliantly written characters, a strong plot and a breathtaking setting.  5 of 5 nymphs  Scandalous Minx @ Literary Nymphs

The Hired Man is a wholly unique and unforgettable story that delves into sensitive subject matter. There are various obstacles for the protagonists to overcome, such as prejudices and coming to terms with ones sexuality. But even more important is the tragedy that has touched both men, and the scars of the past which bind them. Each hero is tortured in his own way, and through spectacular writing and timing, you’ll be exposed to each along the journey.

I highly recommend “The Hired Man” to anyone looking for a wonderful read. This is a book that will keep you enthralled from beginning to end, I could not put it down. The writing is rich, powerful and a joy to read. Bryn’s story will break your heart, the tragedies and mistreatment he has had to endure, his pain, his loneliness will touch you deeply. And Ian, a man who has experienced terrible tragedy also, but a good man still, the only man who is willing to give Bryn a chance. To see these two damaged men strive to overcome their past and establish a future together against all odds is something that will warm your soul. Ms. Irving has also a created a fascinating cast of supporting characters, some you will love, some you will hate, creating a novel of many layers. You will cry, laugh, get angry at the injustices, so many emotions created by this tale. Do yourself a big favour read “The Hired Man” as soon as possible, you will not regret it. Congratulations Ms. Irving on another fabulous novel...

This story began so strongly, the characterizations seemed in sync with their experiences and the times in which they were living. As the chapters progressed the characters began to get to know each other and their interactions seemed honest, believable, and the way they dealt with the conflicts that occurred as a result of them getting to know each other seemed very real to life. But that was all derailed when the Bryn and Ian began their sexual relationship. Ian who has no clue about sex, vacilates between clueless and commanding. Between not being able to face his feelings to talking about them with dying strangers. Bryn who has been stepped on all of his life transforms in a couple of pages from doormat to this "I'm going to take charge" individual. I think the intent was that Ian's belief in him transforms Bryn which would have been stellar if it had been convincing. Some with Ian, I think we are to believe that Bryn frees Ian. At first Bryn is a great distraction from his grief and also a chance for rebirth, for him to make up for the fact that he sees himself responsible for the tragedy in his life. Again, if that has been done in a convincing manner this would have been an excellent book...

Absolutely sophomoric. Truly dull coupled with some really bad prose. Save your money.
