Selfless by Michael Powers

A chance encounter at a lake and instant chemistry send author Rob Harrison and editor Matt Ramirez into each other's arms and lives. After handing over a copy of his novel, Rob is surprised when Matt not only loves it, but thinks it will sell and sell big! They take a chance and jump into the future together.

Several wildly successful books lead to the big screen, and enter Ian Ariola, the man with the movie know-how, and Alan McAlister, an actor with a past. As work begins, the four men bond and their lives become more intertwined, with Matt as the glue that holds them all together.

But it becomes painfully clear that success and money can't solve all problems. Dangerous attraction, predatory businessmen, and hereditary disease all threaten to destroy their happiness, and in the end, one of them becomes the key to what's most important for the other three: love, success, and life itself.  Read an excerpt.

Literary Nymphs - 4 nymphs

I fell in love with Rob and Matt immediately and thoroughly enjoyed following them on their quest for a more meaningful relationship. However, it is when Ian and Alan enter the equation that Michael Powers’ writing shines. It is not what goes on in the bedroom that is important but rather the strong inter-personal relationships and family structure that form the foundation on which I recommend Selfless to any fan of the genre. Ample detail of the publishing and movie industry create a rich and vibrant world for the characters to inhabit. Medical issues are treated with decorum and respect. I couldn’t help but feel somewhat rushed with the speed at which things progressed at times but in keeping with the long running theme of commitment, it is not until the very end that the importance of each character’s presence can be truly understood.

I own and read this book in ebook format; I strongly recommend it for those who are looking for a novel full of romance, well-drawn characters to whom you cannot help but be powerfully drawn, and good role models for young gay adults. Frankly, you will fall in love with both Rob and Matt and wish for a love affair like theirs. Ian is his own delight and a good friend. Alan has a rather shady incident in his past, that the others who need to know do know about, but you will come to like him a great deal. But Matt -- he's simply incredible. The flyer about the book calls him the glue that held the four guys' relationships together, permanently, and he was. In ways that you will not guess. If you read this book, you will enjoy some sexy scenes, some deeply romantic scenes, several lovely romantic relationships, and ultimately an act of selflessness that will take your breath away and leave you crying. I'm happy to give it five stars and have to admit that I did not find any flaws worthy of mentioning in this review. Buy it and read it.
