Smart Bitches - Trashy Books B+
I received an email from a reader who said, “I am
interested in you reviewing a personal favorite of mine.... I’m eager to
hear your thoughts about a book that, in a very short time, I’ve come to
love.” Such a simple endorsement caught my attention, and I read it in a
marathon session that ended with me straddling a running treadmill, unable
to accept that I’d clicked “next page” and there WAS NO NEXT PAGE. It was
over! And I was left with no more of a wonderfully sweet (in a good way)
romance, though I was consoled by a hefty dose of “Just finished a good
romance euphoria.”
Caught Running is a gay romance (it’s also
pretty and witty). In a nutshell (hur): science geek with big giant brain
reconnects with laid back PE teacher who coaches high school baseball team.
Science geek + sports jock + zesty attraction = WIN!
The process of the two of them unraveling their
past and figuring out their present attraction is marvelous in the hands of
Roux and Urban. Against the backdrop of the all-male enclave that is high
school competitive varsity team sports, Jake and Brandon negotiate what is
at essence a truly romantic story of two people falling in love, but because
of the nuances of their characters and their backstory as well as the
ancillary characters, it’s so much more than that.

Whipped Cream Reviews - Best Book
Caught Running is an
awesome twist on the classic theme of the high school prom king getting
together with the valedictorian nerd long after graduation. I had a blast
watching their story unfold.
Jake is the ex-prom king/homecoming king, now a high school coach. He's
large and ripped, and his edgy-one-minute/joking-the-next manner made him
interesting, attractive and real to me. I was blown away by the smoldering
intensity of his reactions to Brandon. Brandon is the ex-nerd science
teacher but has a tall, very fit runner's body that looks exceptional in
baseball pants. Brandon strikes me as a sensitive soul; cerebral and
compassionate. His gentle care and concern for Jake warmed my heart,
especially in the way that Jake responds to him.
I loved this book; I can't say enough good things about it! Even though
they've worked in the same school for years, they haven't interacted until
Brandon is asked to help coach, and the way their rapport grows as a result
is amazing and playful. Neither of them knows that the other is gay, and the
entire first half of the story is just them getting to know each other as
friends, and more than once I laughed out loud at some of their silly
banter. I was in awe of how their feelings evolve and how they grow to care
about each other. I was able to get inside both Jake's and Brandon's
thoughts and feel the growing excitement and desire for the other man
without being able to show it, and the sexual tension just keeps building
and building at just the perfect pace to keep me biting my lip, anxious for
more. Besides the physical attraction, they both recognize that they
genuinely like each other and are surprised by the comfort level they share
that neither had ever experienced before. Jake and Brandon are just so sweet
together and I couldn't get enough of them! Once they consummate their
relationship, it is physical and hot, and they can barely keep their hands
off each other. But the emotions continue to show through and grow even
stronger, and I loved them as a couple.
This is one of the most romantic stories I have ever read, and so vividly
written that I felt I was a part of their journey. It has a double happy
ending, increasing the feel-good factor. I'm pleased to award Caught
Running my first "Best Book" rating and I recommend it with enthusiasm!

CAUGHT RUNNING is a wonderful contemporary romance. Jake and Brandon have
some amazing chemistry. They go from a shy flirtation to an outright
claiming, but it is done in a way that is very natural to their
relationship. These two were not really friends; even at first, they were
passing acquaintances. The authors did a great job of slowly evolving their
relationship, throwing these characters together in situations where they
had to take chances and let go of stereotypes. These men are not just the
jock and the nerd; they are layered characters who are struggling with real
issues. I really enjoyed watching these two fall for each other. Some scenes
were comical, others more seductive, but there was always this vibrant
current of energy between them. Abigail Roux and Madeleine Urban have penned
a charming story. Jake and Brandon will steal your heart!
Fallen Angel Reviews
- 5 Angels
Madeleine Urban and Abigail Roux have
taken the stereotypical story of the 'jock' and the 'nerd' and turned it
into a delightful story. Brandon is an introverted, studious man working on
his doctorate while teaching high school. He is dedicated to his students
and often spreads himself thin trying to help them be successful
academically. Jake appears to be the typical high school jock and Homecoming
King who went to college on a sports scholarship and then chose teaching
P.E. when his injuries prevented him from going Pro. But Jake is so much
more. The attraction between the two develops slowly but then takes off and
builds to a crescendo. Both men are smart, funny, and dedicated to their
students but Jake spends a great deal of time hiding his intelligence.
Ironically, both men are gay but neither knows about the other. The authors
have done an excellent job of portraying the sexual frustration that the
mutual attraction engenders and the effort that Jake and Brandon go to to
hide that attraction, from themselves and others. Once together the sensual
scenes are arousing and well written, they convey the emotional depth of
their feelings coupled with the anxiety because both feel that it's too good
to be true.
